They tell you all humility goes out the door when you become a mom. In fact, I feel my self-worth diminishing as I type this, but I never knew my dose of humility would come super sized and at work.
Monday: a day of firsts; first day Jonah was in daycare, first day back to work, first day of pumping in the office. As any working mother (or stay-at-home mom for that fact) will tell you, pumping is no fun, but I am fortunate to have my own office, equipped with a door that locks and plenty of privacy. So I went to do my business first thing this morning and realize that all the “parts” to my pump are resting at home on the drying rack. Nice.
As the engorgement ensues, I resort to extreme measures and decide to express by hand – something I had never tried (nor did I ever want to!) As I began to feel more confident and make some progress, I hear stirring outside my office door. Did I mention my door was not shutting properly since the previous week? (Can you see where I am going with this?) Simultaneously, the handle jiggles, the door opens, a strange man sticks his head in the door and I desperately try to cover myself and salvage what dignity I still had. And, to add insult to injury, he continues to ask "You having trouble with your door locking." You think!
Who knows what this poor (and nosy) maintenance man saw or thought I was doing behind closed doors. Hopefully he has learned his lesson: why knock if you’re not going to wait for a response?
So, if humility is a virtue, consider me enlightened!
